Resumo (abstract)

The Aga Khan Award for Architecture (AKAA) is a prestigious international architectural prize established in 1977 by His Late Highness Aga Khan IV that is awarded every three years to projects that set new standards of excellence in architecture, urban planning, historic preservation, and landscape architecture, particularly in societies where Muslims have a significant presence. The AKAA seeks to identify and encourage buildings that address the physical, social, and economic needs of communities, while also responding to their cultural aspirations. It recognises not only architects but also municipalities, builders, clients, master artisans, and engineers. This talk will focus on the criteria and perspectives that came together in the selection of mosque projects such as Sherefudin’s White Mosque, Bosnia (1983), the Bhong Mosque, Pakistan (1986), the Great Mosque in Riyadh (1995) and the Bait Ur Rouf Mosque in Bangladesh (2016).
